Where to Place the Trash Area, Gas Tank, and Electric Meter in Your Home in Panama

When designing a home in Panama, small details can make a big difference in how comfortable and functional the house will be. Three things that are often overlooked during planiing are the trash area (locally called tinaquera), the gas tank, and the electric meter.

The Trash Area - "Tinaquera"

In Panama, the trash area is traditionally called tinaquera. The origin of this word goes gack to the time of the U.S. occupation in the Panama Canal Zone. During those years, a company called Tin & Co. was in charge of garbage collection. The trash barrels they used carried the company's logo, so Panamanians began calling them tinacos. Over time, the space where these barrels were kept became known as the tinaquera.

When planning your home, it's best to place the tinaquera near the street or driveway so that garbage can be collected easily. At the same time, it should be discreet and ventilated, to avoid odors reaching the house.

The Gas Tank

For safety, the gas tank should always be outside the house in a ventilated space, protected from direct sun and rain. A good location is near the kitchen wall (to minimize piping) but never inside the kitchen or enclosed spaces.

The Electric Meter

Your electric company will require the meter to be placed on the front or side of the property for easy access. It's best to integrate it into the design so it doesn't affect the appearence of the facade. A small service wall or cabinet can keep it accesible but discreet.

Final Thought

By planning these service areas early, you can keep your home looking clean and organized while making maintenance and daily life easier.
